Joining Merchant Navy - GME (Graduate Marine Engineering) course eligibility, scope, jobs and salary

Shipping is the backbone of international trade, carrying over 90% by volume and 80% by value of the world trade. Without shipping, the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for the modern world would not be possible. There are over 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, transporting most kinds of cargo.  India is a large manpower supplier to the international shipping industry especially in the officers segment and is reputed for providing highly qualified and well trained personnel to work on foreign owned merchant ships.

Expert opinion and statistical forecast suggests that Indian Officers will continue to be in demand in the foreseeable future. Merchant Navy is a rewarding career, both financially and professionally. The nature of a job at sea presents unmatched demands and challenges, providing a fulfilling career choice. Self reliance and resourcefulness will become a part of your personality. You will be required to employ both your theoretical knowledge and practical skills to meet the challenges of the sea. Life at sea can be tough. The work is strenuous and physically demanding. The benefits however, include a satisfaction as an officer, working on a globalized platform, of being a world traveler, a very handsome salary and a sense of belongingness to one of the finest global professions and truly international perspective.

What is GME?

GME means Graduate Marine Engineering & a candidate who completes GME is known as a graduate marine engineer.

In simple terms this course is the minimum requirement for a candidate completing B.E (Mechanical) to join as an Engineering officer in the Merchant Navy. After the completion of this course the candidate will be sent for on-board training as a Fifth Engineer.

ME is a One year residential course which imparts practical knowledge and strict discipline to the trainee. This course basically deals with understanding, familiarizing and overhauling of the machinery found on-board a ship.

As mentioned above, This is a 1 year pre-sea training course. It focuses on Technical aspects related to Marine Engineering, such as-
  • Marine Electrical and Electronics Systems
  • Marine Machinery
  • Marine Engineering Drawing
  • Marine Safety Engineering
  • Naval Architecture
  • Communication Skills
  • Hydraulics
On successfully completion of this course the candidate will be given a Indian CDC and also will be exempted from writing the Part-A of Class four examination.

The candidate will be then called by his sponsoring company and will be given the post of  a  Fifth engineer on-board, students will have to go through 6 months of compulsory sea service. After this stint and clearing safety courses, other training modules and tests, clearing MEO Class-4 Part B Examination, a cadet will be provided with Marine Engineering Officer Class 4 Certificate of Competency.

After obtaining this certificate, one may start working as a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World! 12 months of sea service later, one may again appear for training modules and appear for MEO Class 2- Part B Examination.

The point is that while in service, one may choose to appear for further training modules, courses and appear for exams. These exams will help one attain advanced competency certificates, like- Marine Engineering Class 2 Certificate of Competency and Marine Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency. In short, one may rise through the ranks and eventually become Chief Engineering Officer, gradually.

How to become a Marine Engineer after doing Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical and Marine engineering courses have several subjects in common and this makes it easier for a mechanical engineer to get an additional degree in marine and open new doors of opportunities.
Moreover, with the present shortage of maritime professionals in the shipping industry and lack of quality mechanical engineering jobs in the market, taking up marine engineering is an ideal choice for those already having a degree in mechanical engineering.

How to Become a Marine Engineer?

The best part of pursuing a marine engineering degree after mechanical engineering is that you don’t have to go through the four years of rigorous engineering training, which a marine engineer  (Graduate Marine Engineering GME)  has to go through. All you need is a one year specialized course.
A one year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering would give students the license to enter merchant navy. This one year GME course is all you need to become a marine engineer after doing mechanical engineering.
